This morning, Pastor Dave brought part four in his sermon series, and shared with us about "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." (Matthew 5:6)
We looked at how this beatitude speaks of a strong desire, a passionate persuit, a Godly motivation deep inside the soul to be satisfied. We looked at Matthew 4, where Jesus is tempted by Satan -- with provision, power, and position which are all human desires and cravings. With that, we shared things that we hunger and thirst for in this world/culture such as acceptance, to be loved, understandging, knowledge, health, safety. And how we try to fill our hunger and thirst by using things like the internet, other people, stuff...
Then we looked at spiritual hunger and thirst -- and how righteousness is not optional for a believer, but a spiritual necessity.
- in poverty of spirit we turn away from self-seeking
- in mourning we turn away from self-satisfaction
- in meekness we turn away from self-serving
To have God's life within us through the new birth in Jesus Christ is to desire more of His likeness within us by growing in righteousness. A truely starving person has a single, all-consuming passion for food and water. Nothing else has the slightest attraction of appeal. Nothing else matters.
What are you hungry for??
